Last two days

We awoke to,a much more threatening sky this morning. And not such good news for our home coming, as we heard about Sandy!

Yesterday was a quite day, there was lots of sun and it was very warm, felt like the Caribbean, high 80 s. I guess that is what is feeding the storm. Some one on the elevator this morning said they saw a water spot, ugh, we don't need them!

Today we will do some packing, and fill out the customs forms, not going to be a pool day I don't think

It was beautiful when we finely arrived in Fort Lauderdale three hours late

I don't have a picture of the last night on the ship, but I can tell you it was rough!!!

We are now in Savannah Ga, and it is and was beautiful. We will leave for home in the morning, but we have really enjoyed our extra day here. I will post some photos when we get home,,,,,,, if we have power.

Another sea day

We awoke at 0645 but luckily, we had gained an hour, last night so it didn't seem so early. The dawn began to break outside our cabin balcony, as we are heading due west, so the sun is coming up on the aft of the ship. The sea had calmed to a mere 8 - 12 ft swells and the sky was clear for miles.

Ed went to the buffet line for coffee and pastries for me, before heading off to meet Jack for breakfast in the main dinning room. Jack and Ed had arranged with the head waiter last night to have eggs Benedict for breakfast because it was not on the regular menu, and they both enjoyed every morsel!! After breakfast we got our suites on and went to the Lido deck and found a location to spend the day poolside. The seas continued to be calm and the skies clear with the temperature in the low 80s. Who would think we could swim, and sun bathe on this trip, usually it is quite cool, but because we are traveling so much further south it is warm and sunny. For those of you that like such info, we are traveling, 26 degrees north and 30 degrees west, a magnificent day!!!

Cheese Burgers were for lunch along with Bloody Mary's!

We adjoined to our room early in the afternoon to get ready for dinner and an evening at Skywalker's lounge, to meet up with the group.

We it is another beautiful day, we had a great time last night, but I got a sunburn yesterday, and what did I wake up to???

Sea days

The begging of our sea days, the weather is great, today, the sun is shinning, yesterday was a bit gray, but nice. Seas have been calm.

Yesterday they announced that we had an outbreak of Norovirus, ugh! So our ultimate ship tour was canceled, bummer. We hope the tour will go if this outbreak doesn't get worse, but I am not counting on it.

Oh well it is a very pretty day and smooth seas so who am I to compline. We are well and sure hope to stay that way.

Funchal Madera

We arrived at the port of Funchal Madera at 0650 after a very bouncy night at sea, I am glad we skirted the storms,,, as this was some of the biggest seas I have been in! It was still dark and sun rise wasn't until 0852 because of the manner that they set their clocks. The clouds were gone and the sun came brightly to invite us to the island. It is truly beautiful!!! Since it was Saturday, we decided to spend the day shopping the many markets of the city including the large fish market where they were dressing the large tuna and other game fish. It was fascinating. The vegetable and flower markets were also interesting with their world wide variety, also the varieties of plants that will grow on the island. The city of 100000+ people was very clean, there are many sights to see (simply beautiful), excellent golf courses, friendly welcoming community, and the infrastructure was excellent. Everyone agreed this was to be a future destination again! I would love to come back, it reminded us of Hawaii, before it got so populated.

.

When we were back in our room, the replica of Christopher Columbus's ship the Santa Maria was sailing past our deck.

Now that we were all aboard again, it is on to our seven sea days back to Ft Lauderdale, heading southwest to avoid the seas left behind by the hurricanes and tropical storms.

Day 2

Once again we awoke early, and now it was on to getting things ready for leaving the Locanda Orseolo and embarking on the Ruby in the afternoon. After completing packing we enjoyed another beautiful breakfast.
The morning was bright and the streets were lively. After having a full day on Monday we decided to take a gondola ride this morning. Cindy and I have been coming to Venice since 1972 and each time have not been in a position to take a ride. This time we took the time. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL
We then went to the hotel Europa for late Bloody Mary's.. We returned to the hotel where they had held our bags until our arrival to pick them up. The water taxi arrived at the window and we bordered it through the window with our bags. What great fun! Almost like Harry Potter. Arrived on the Ruby at 1530 to begin our journey.

We got back from our shopping, . our bags were still not at the cabin, so we went to get some liquid refreshment. Then on to dinner, every one was there, except John and Ilene, but and we still had a lively a conversation.
When we got back to our room, late our bags were there, so it was on to unpacking, Ed was not feeling well, and we thought it was just fatigue, but it proved to be food poisoning! He was one sick puppy for the next couple of days.

The next morning Ed was still not doing well, but he made a valiant effort to go on. After breakfast, The group immediately decided to walk to the co-op to purchase wine for the cruise. Cindy enjoyed the trip since see had never experience the general market store.

We invited everyone to our room for sail-away, as we are the only ones with a balcony. We have a nice size balcony, but the cabin steward Jirasin (J for short) opened the door for the service balcony next door, so we would have a lot more room. He is a great steward!
The group arrived at our cabin at 1330 to ready for sail away from Venice, once again it was beautiful and the weather cooperated pretty much, and once we cleared the barrier islands we made our turn for the heel of Italy

Sea Venice we set alarm for 0700 and requested room service at 0730. Unfortunately they never came,, not sure what was going on. The morning events included the Cruise Critics group get to together (meet and greet) nice group over all, followed by the gift exchange. Not sure where the time goes, but very soon it was time to dress for formal night and time to round the group up for cocktails. As usual all the preparation paid off and all was in place for formal night.
We had a good time, but Ed was sick, he left early, poor man.

Naples, we set our alarm for 0600 and again requested room service for 0630. This time they showed up 0530 with half the order. Not good! We met Val & Jim at the international coffee bar for an egg muffin and go ashore and begin our tour of the Amalfi coast and a visit of the Herculium ruins. The weather was not too cooperative as it rained as we preceded down the coast with Jim taking pictures through the rain drops. As we hit the bright spots the vistas showed their beauty and as we stopped at a village the rain would stop. What fun! We finally pasted Amalfi and joined the UNESCO heritage site road to the outer most villages where we had lunch at a family restaurant on the hillside. Our driver was telling us that his father's first job was leading donkeys along the old donkey trail to carry water back to his village, the travel time was three hours each way along the cliffs. The only village water was that brought in by his donkey group. After a great lunch with wine and water for 11.5 Euros each, we headed back for a guided tour of Herculium. The skies cleared and we even got a good shot at Mt Vesuvius. We returned to the ship onetime with Ed's pedometer reading 11572. And Ed was feeling human again, but I think he lost 10 lbs as all his clothes are loose now.

Casablanca, Marco

Casablanca,,,

We set the alarm for 0515 but awoke at 0500 and ready for our arrival in Casablanca at 0630. Our tour began at 0655, but we sat around waiting for the tour to go until after eight, then we briefly toured Casablanca (second largest city in Africa) and then on to the ancient city of Rabat it took us about an hour and a half to get there. We toured the outside of the Royal Palace, and on to the Oudaya Kasba, and we were suppose, to stop for sweet tea, but there was a mix up, and all we got was a potty stop, that was ok as it was a western toilet! I think Ed was the only one who had ever been to Africa, I was not impressed. This country is still half in the third world, toilets were few and far between and most of them were two foot prints and a whole!

When we returned to Casablanca we asked the bus driver to let us off in town; we hopped a couple of taxis and were off to RICK's CAFE! Jack had made reservations for all eight of us, what a treat! It is dressed out like the movie, and although expensive the food was pretty good. As we ate, the clouds moved in and the rain poured down. So after lunch at Rick's we hoped taxies back to the ship.

.

When we returned we were notified that our next port had changed to Madeira moving our Atlantic crossing track further south because of hurricane Rafael. Ed had warned us a few days ago, that we might have something like this happen, in fact he asked the Commodore about it at the chefs table when he met us, and he had said they were watching it. So it's off to Madeira tonight! This is exciting we have never been there

On our way to Casablanca

Sea day journey to Casablanca,,,,

We slept in until past 0900 even with a time change with the clock being set back one hour. We gathered ourselves together and went to the wheelhouse bar for British Pub food! Bangers and mash or fish and chips with a variety of beers and ales, great way to start the day, when you get up late, and who knows what time it is any way. We decided to make reservations at Sabatini's for dinner and relaxed the remainder of the day, until we readied ourselves for dinner.

We went through the Straits of Gibraltar, tonight, we had good weather so we got some good photos

We had a great dinner, and then it was off to early bed, as tomorrow was a very early wake up.

Canne

Canne, the lazy sun didn't rise until 0755, and the clouds were hanging around but it appeared it would clear and it did. We took the Princess Nice city tour and enjoyed a leisurely stroll and a visit to the Nice Flea market with antiques and such! Just a couple of purchases, but Ed found a big gold ring on the sidewalk, by the beach, we looked around to see if anyone was looking for it but,,, nothing! It was an interesting morning, we could have spent more time in the market that is for sure, but like all tours they had other plans.
The took us on a little train around the old city, and up to the top of an overlook of Nice, it was cute. Then an hour and a half back to the ship, but where we were dropped off there was nothing to see, our ship was parked in an alternative anchorage away from the main section of Canne and therefore no shops or cafes in the immediate area.. we returned to the ship about 1400, pedometer reading was only 7245. This was a small hint of events to come!

As we weighted anchor, Capt Speaking noted that the harbor master had located us at this anchorage because of high winds in the future! Guess what Lee and Colleen, this was an evening event like 2009 with the highest wind at 74 knots and seas running between 15 and 20 feet from 1730 until 0330 with us running a full speed and a roaster tale behind us. Another French - Mediterranean adventure! Well, we arrived in Barcelona about 20 minutes late this time, so we must have deviated around to some extent.

Livorno, Florence

Livorno, the third day of the Italian gullet and again up at 0600 and breakfast at the International cafe we gave up on room service, we were to meet the van by 0800.

The sun was just slithering above the horizon as we boarded our van and the clouds that had followed us up the Italian coast line began to part. GOOD! We headed directly to Pisa to visit the leaning tower and take lots of photos. Half of our group had never been here. So we did that and then our driver that the Verrazano winery was closed and indicated he would locate another winery for us to lunch at. Definitely a communication problem! Well we thought we sorted it out, as he said we could still see the castle, so he drove us on to the Verrazano wine sales location and did buy wine, only the estate was also closed and that by going there we would now miss our reservation time for the museums in Florence. Not Good!

Well, we made it clear that lunch was not important and that all the museums and churches were. So we were off, the sun was in full bloom and the air was fresh at 70 with a gentle brisk breeze! Excellent for walking and taking pictures. The rest of the group, were able to get into the Accademia, and see David, so they were now happy.

Later we found a small pizzeria for sandwiches and Cindy and I split one and had a beer each, and the others had pizza. On to the Ponte Vecchio where Val bought some nugget candy that she Haden's had sense she was in England. Then we drove up to the top of hill that I can't remember the name of and got some great shots of Florence.
At the end it was another wonderful adventure and the sun was gently setting on the Med. my pedometer reading was 12647. Once aboard Captain Speaking (Yeomans) the evenings sailing to Canne, France. A cold front would lay across our course and the seas may be a bit bumpy! Well, about 0030 there was a large large bang as the lightening hit very close by and we were treated to a beautiful light and cloud show out our stateroom window our the stern of the ship. Absolutely beautiful...

We arrive in Venice

Arrived in Venice on time and had excellent flights. The weather is great with lots of warm weather with sunny skies. The water taxi was great and took us directly to our hotel entrance window. There's a story there. More later as we begin our trip!

We awoke about 830 after a good night sleep, to sight see in Venice. After a beautiful full breakfast We went to find the closest Vaporetto (water bus) stop. We purchased 36hrs tickets and hopped the next one to the Lido island. As we neared our arrival at the Lido the arriving Ruby princess began to enter the Venice waterways! What a sight, we stayed on the Vaporetto and headed into the waterway to join her. we raced beside and behind her as she sailed up the grand canal. Great photos! The remainder of the day was full of shopping at Murano for glass and Burano for lace. All total we sailed around a majority of the islands and completed another 7 miles of walking. Nothing like the 10+ miles we walked yesterday! Tonight we revisited the Rosa Rosa Restaurant for a second evening, with the same outstanding results. Closing in on midnight here and the conclusion of our second day in Venice, hope all is going great for all of you too!

Trip to Vancouver

Today we are taking another grand adventure, we go to Vancouver! The day began with one more wonderful breakfast; an asparagus omelet with smoked salmon and a berry compote. I don't like yogurt, but the yogurt they serve here is wonderful!

We finished packing and Stephanie, the girl that cleaned our room, came up ,while Ed was paying the bill and showed me how to make the swans from towels. I hope I can post a picture, but I am having a problem doing that on the iPad. She then helped us get our bags down the stairs. Michelle one of our hosts, presented us with a snack bag with chocolate
Cookies and water bottles.

Then the taxi arrived and we were off to our next adventure, we purchased our tickets and position ourselves, and our bags; all right in front of our bus bay. The coach ride to the ferry lasted about 45 minutes. We reached the ferry terminal and they placed the bus first in line. The ferry holds 2100 people and a total of 480 vehicles. The trip across from Vancouver island to the city of Vancouver lasted one and a half hours with the journey through an archipelago similar to the journey to Stockholm. It was beautiful!

We arrive at the downtown bus stop on time; then the major bag drag down the street and around the corner up the hill to the taxi Line; finally a quick ride to the Westin Bayshore by the harbor. We received complimentary room upgrades for my brother and wife and us; the rooms overlooking the harbor. After unpacking we left to walk along the boardwalk for about a mile in the mist rain watching all the sea plans come and go with the ships. Then we stopped at Cardera's Restaurant, at a pleasure boat marina, and enjoyed a beautiful dinner on the covered deck in the misty weather; what fun! Finally it was back to the hotel for a restful sleep and looking forward to a day with Karen and Joe tomorrow.

Victoria

May 28 2012

The day started very cloudy, but breakfast consisting of seafood crepes and berry compote changed our demeanor. Then it was off to visit the Craigdarroch Castle walking up the hill and along the streets of the city. Gosh the yards and their flowers were beautiful! After seeing the castle and climbing the five flights of stairs we started our walking journey across town mostly down hill to the Abkhazia Garden. Wow and double wow! This is the most beautiful gardens we have even walked through. Just breath taking, we had lunch at their cafe, complete with tea and scones. Then it was off to find a bus to the center of town and the bus station to arrange for travel to Vancouver on Wednesday. After visiting the station we wandered through a totem forrest. It was impressive. Then off to find a place for diner. We completed the evening with tea and chocolate cookies at the B&B. Great day and the rain held off and did let the sun shine as the evening came to a close! Tomorrow it's two more gardens and another bus adventure!

Good morning all,
Reading over Ed's email, brought a giggle to me, as does he sound like he is gardened out? :)
The garden at Abkhazia was really spectacular, I think I must have taken a 1000 photos. I will try to post a few later.
Tomorrow, we are going to the Butchart garden. It is the garden that is supposed to be the best in the country. We shall see because it will be hard to top Abkhazia, and the history behind Abkhazia, is a real love story. I want to read the book "a strange cage" about her time in the concentration camp, this is feeding my artistic sole!

I still haven't figured out how to post a photo using blogger from the iPad, when I do I will put them on.

Canada

On Mon, May 28, 2012 at 12:41 AM

We have arrived here in beautiful Victoria BC. Departed Dulles airport on time after being taken to the airport by Bruce. The United flight was fast arriving in Seattle 45 minutes early. We arrived at the ferry boat departure site 3 hours early, thank goodness, they had the reservation messed up and had us down for the morning sailing which had already departed. We had our reservation tickets to confirm our afternoon sailing and the necessary were made. We had lunch at Paddy's Pub a short distance from the pier; gosh it was good, meatloaf, garlic potatoes, carrots and peas! Hum, hum, good! Then on to the ferry and Victoria. We arrived at Victoria on schedule and caught a taxi to Abbymoore Manor. It was a great trip and it's now off to catchup on a bit of sleep.

Trip to DC for Cadet Reunion

We are home now, but we had a great time, and I will download pictures, of the trip, in a bit.  It is always fun to see old friends.

At home but about to start traveling again

Well, it has been a while, since I posted and I guess I should start with the finish, of the last cruise because many of my dear friends and family have asked for me to do so.  So I will do that, now lets see where did I leave off?

Tuesday 25 October

The captain had warned us the night before that the weather was not going to be on our side today. Sure enough he was correct as we boarded the tenders in the dark, rainy, and windy morning at 0700. We were first off the ship as the rain pelted down. Unfortunately our guide was no where to be seen as we waited in the rain. She did arrive at approximately 0800. We all piled into the van just to escape the continuing rain. Fun, fun!

We drove along the coast line from Cannes to Antibes and to the hill top ancient village Biot. The rain didn’t stop, but we did. We all climbed out of the van and walked up the stone walkway into the town. The streets were very small walkways dotted occasionally with wide steps. Partly up into the village we spotted a shop selling umbrellas. Big umbrellas! That was for us. Cindy found a beautiful rainbow colored one, just perfect for the remainder of the day’s travel.

After walking through the village we returned to a restaurant at the village gate, it had a big bocce court, right in front. Reminded us of the movie, a Year in Province. We wished the weather had been nice, and the men playing. They were serving a veal reargue’ with peas and carrots for the special. So it was the special with a bottle of wine and French bread and we were warm and dry again. Not much to do in the pouring rain but slowly return to the ship, we would like to return here some day. Once again safely on board to depart for the warmed sunnier Barcelona!

Wednesday 26 October

The morning began with us sitting on the balcony watching the sun rise. It was beautiful! After breakfast we made our way off the ship meeting Ann & Al and Gail & Tom along the way.

We took the Princess shuttle bus to the world trade center. Then it was off to stroll La Rambla promenade checking out the shops and head toward the large city market full of fresh vegetables, fruit, candy, baked goods, meat and fish. It is similar to many European City Markets.

After the market visit it was off to visit the old sector of town walking by the Cathedral, the line was too long, and then seeking out a Tosca shop for lunch. The menu was complete with over 35 choices, we collectively selected 10 different ones, ranging from calamari to ham and beef. Of course there also was the obligatory wine and beer to top it all off.

On the return to the ship Cindy and Gail had their photos taken with the street mime, he was really good! Well, 6.2 miles later we were back safely in the arms of the Ruby Princess. As we departed Barcelona the sea gulls followed close behind as if to say bon voyage to the Ruby as she leaves for the Caribbean not to return to Barcelona, until next spring.

Thursday, October 27th

Today is a welcome sea day, we are not doing much today, just resting up a bit. Just had a great pub lunch in the Wheel House Bar, they do this on sea days. It is great fish and chips. Today’s big event is going through the Straights of Gibraltar, and me posting this blog,, we will see what happens first. We passed through the straight at 7pm as thr sun was setting. We also placed a note in a wine bottle and placed it in the sea as we exited the straight. The evening clouds and weather closed in as we departed for diner. While at diner the seas became heavier and heavier and it was slightly challenging to return to the aft of the ship.

Friday October 28th

We awoke about 0400 to a heavy thud, not sure the size wave, we were in the north Atlantic and we were welcomed by the sea . It was a rough night with all the folks awakened by the sea. With sunrise the weather cleared and the seas became calmer. We passed under bridge to enter Lisbon’s harbor and docked at noon.

After a slow disembarkation process all the tours rushed to make to most of our 5 hour stay. We boarded our private tour to Sintra to visit the castle located on the mountain top, Park and Palace of Pana. It was built in the 19th century and was last occupied just prior to WWI.

After the palace tour we returned to Lisbon and stop at the infamous cookie shop for espresso and cookies. Then it was back to the ship to begin the long voyage across the Atlantic.

Leaving Lisbon, is beautiful, once again going under the bridge, and this time from our cabin, in the aft of the ship.

Saturday October 29th

This is the first of many sea days as we begin our track across the Atlantic. The weather and sea state forecast was for mostly cloudy skies and 7 to 17 foot swells with periods of 13+ seconds. Fortunately the swells were head on so the motion was simply up and down. Not to hard to navigate down the corridors of the ship. We spent a majority of the day attempting to gain connectivity with our computers. By the time we quit, it was time to shower and dress for formal night. The chiefs were preparing a rack of lamb for us in the main dining room, wow was it terrific! It was a excellent evening.

Sunday October 30th

We arrived on schedule 10am at Ponta Delgada, on the island of San Miguel, the largest of the Azores. We took a personalized van tour of the north and south coasts of island. Our first stop was at a large grocery store similar to a Walmart complete with underground parking. It was really nice. We stopped there to purchase port wine and of course cheese which the islands are famous for. The market prices are better than the tourist shops.

The cost of this island is spectacular, you would think you were in Ireland, it is one of the best kept secreats of Europe.

We proceeded on our way stopping in the middle of the island at Furnas, site of the many volcanic mud pots. We stopped to see our meal being cooked in the volcanic mud and then proceeded to a restaurant.

They bring out the pots and put them in the ground

Then they bury them, each of thes holes belong to different familys

Where they opened the pot and served us our lunch of, beef, chicken, pork, potatoes, yams, taro root, carrots, and cabbage; wine, beer, and water too. It was really excellent. The name of the meal is “Cozido nas Caldeiras.”

As we were returning our guide stopped at a roadside rest and cut open a fresh pineapple for all of us. Wow and double wow! By far the very best pineapple we have ever had. Even the main stem within the pineapple was tender and sweet. It was fantastic.

Then it was back to the ship where we held a small sail away party for our van partners. Ordered 2 pizzas and of course we had the wine and beer. We sat on the deck and watched as we sailed away for our next 6 days across the Atlantic. The captain has warned us that the swells will be rather high and the weather not so wonderful. This thirty day cruise has had some interesting weather. All the folks left about 830pm and we decided to call it an evening. We have turned back the clock for the third day in a row as we transit the Atlantic.

Monday October 31st

Happy Halloween! We were greeted with morning dark gray skies and rough seas with 17ft swells. Just the type of day you wish to curl up with a book on the couch. We went to our regular breakfast at Sabortini’s Restaurant and then took some time to trouble shoot our computers. Cindy’s Ipad 2 is doing great while our little Eee PC is having its problems connecting. Of course that is what we were using for our Blog posts which are all in Word. We skipped lunch to get ready for the Cruise Critics Halloween party at 1500. It was great, our costumes worked and several folks did not recognize us. What fun! We stayed at the Sky Walkers lounge until diner and then joined the group for diner. We slowly made our way to Club fusion at 9pm to join the Princess Halloween Party, dancing, and parade. Excellent Halloween party, we entered the parade and danced the evening away! Fun, fun!!! Halloween is the best for parties!!!

Tuesday November 1st

The connection was not good, so I am finishing this trip now,,, in 2012  here are pictures of some of the sea days, and our docking in Fort Lauderdale, in the wee hours of the morning,  it was a wonderful cruise, and we had a grand time, as much for the people we cruised with as where we cruised… we will be doing part of this cruise again in the fall 2012 and then again in 2013, so I guess you could say we like this itinerary.

Ed loved this lunch, hot dog is his favorite food

We drove home, from Florida, and our next cruise was on the ferry accross the James river and then we were home.

The birds wecomed us back

It was wonderful, but it was good to be home too, and the trees were in there full fall color!
